6D. Patty's family (more coming)

From Patty's oldest daughter, Jane
Dear Governor Blunt,

My name is Jane Van Benthusen and I'm Patty Prewitt's oldest daughter. I honestly feel that my mother deserves and has earned commutation of her sentence. She has served 22 years now. There is not a day that goes by that I don't feel bad for my mom and how it this has affected our family. We miss her horribly and she has missed everything. She missed all of our (her own children) graduations, weddings and even all of the births of her 10 grandchildren. She has missed all of the parties, holidays, talent shows, plays, picnics, skating parties and funerals. She even missed her oldest sons funeral. Patty's children, parents, siblings, relatives, friends and acquaintances all have been negatively affected by her incarceration. This year I have been battling cancer and even though my mom can call me and write, and she does regularly, it's not the same as it would be if she could be with me. I need her home, we all do. Please look into your heart and grant her clemency.

Thank You,
Jane Van Benthusen
From Patty's son-in-law
Dear Governor Blunt:

Thank you for taking the time to read these letters. My letter is a recommendation that the 50 year, no parole sentence of Patricia Prewitt be commuted to time served (22 years) and she be released from prison.

My name is Loran Van Benthusen and I am the husband of Patty's oldest daughter, Jane. We have two sons Zachary and Jace, they are Patty's oldest grandchildren at 19 and 16 respectively. They have never known their grandmother outside prison walls and have never seen her in anything besides prison jumpsuits. It is especially hard for my wife who yearns and needs to have her mother back. Patty has a large and loving family and every day we all ache with her. Patty and her family have always maintained her innocence. This terrible sentence imposed upon her is equally shared and cruelly visited upon her family each and every day.

The police investigation, or lack there of, was shoddy at best. The prosecution was poorly prepared and did not prove her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. There were numerous trial irregularities that are no doubt mentioned in many of these letters. On top of that, she was offered a plea bargain of 6 - 7 years and didn't take it; maintaining her innocence. But beyond all that, the fact remains that a 50 year no parole sentence is cruel and excessive.

Please take these letters into consideration for the commutation of Patty's sentence and let her come home her loving family that has been sharing this sentence with her for the past 22 years.

Sincerely,
Loran J. Van Benthusen
